About Sencha
Sencha is Japan’s most common green tea, the cup most people reach for every day. The leaf is grown in full sun, unlike the shaded leaf grown for our Gyokuro, then steamed just after picking to stop oxidation and rolled into the fine, needle-like shape you see in the packet.
Our own sencha runs the full range, from an easy everyday cup to Shuppin-Sencha, the blend we prepare each year for Japan’s national tea exhibition, and a JAS certified organic line grown without agricultural chemicals or commercial fertiliser. Several of our teas are grown in the Uji vicinity, long known for bountiful harvests of high-grade leaf.
Imperial Grade
Once a year, Japan’s highest tea authority holds a national exhibition for sencha. Imperial is our entry for it, a small blend of carefully selected leaf judged against the best sencha in the country.
Everyday Grade
The sencha we reach for most often ourselves. Quality leaf suited to a daily pot, hot or iced, in loose leaf or a teabag for easy brewing on the go.
Sencha “Miyako”
A good quality sencha with a slightly astringent edge and a pleasantly balanced flavour, well suited to daily drinking.
Sencha “Kyo no Tsuyu”
Kyo no Tsuyu means dew of Kyoto, and describes the mellow, elegant character of this high-grade sencha. One of our most popular teas in Japan.
Sencha “Kamo”
Kamo means lush, named for an area near Uji known for bountiful harvests of high-grade tea. Light and sweet with a pleasant aroma, a popular daily choice among Japanese tea drinkers.
Sencha “Maruyama”
Maruyama means circle mountain, a hilly park area in Kyoto. Made from young buds picked in the first harvest of the year, sweet in flavour with a pungent aroma.
Sencha “Hachiju-Hachiya”
Hachiju-Hachiya means 88 nights, harvested 88 days into the Japanese spring from young, tender first-harvest buds. A balance of mellow sweetness and light, refreshing astringency.
