Sweetness
Umami
Astringency
Aroma
Among the Yamashita Gyokuro, this tea is the most affordable. It may well be used as an “initiation” into the compilation of Yamshita’s expert teas. When infused with water at lower temperatures, it emanates a soft and sweet aroma; when infused with hotter water, it will leave a clean and refreshing aftertaste. This is a wonderful gift item for someone special who understands the nuances of Japanese green tea.

This gyokuro is quite the experience.
Steep 1 – Think of how much spice a raw cayenne pepper has in it – the first steeping is the umami equivalent of that, with a powerful aroma of buttered greens, and an even more powerful taste that spreads along your tongue with the smallest sip.
Steep 2 – shifts away from the umami and brings in some tangy citrus, lemon or yuzu, with some sweet peas aftertaste.
Steep 3 – umami is now in the background (but still prominent), sweet pea taste in the fore, balancing the tangy citeus.
Steep 4 – very light compared to the first 3, but what you do get is all sweetness, snow peas, all sorts of greens.
Verdict: This tea is worth every penny. Steep it between 115 and 135 F to get the best results, and it will reward you with a transforming flavor and aroma through your session.
